Calcou reveals mesmerizing music video created with AI

Rising musician Calcou is sharing a vibrant visualizer for his latest single, ‘Below’ with the world. The video was created by Mahir Duman, a visual artist from Berlin who used AI. If you’re curious about checking out more of his work, we’d encourage you to head over to his Instagram page. The video for ‘Below’ is mesmerizing as colours merge and transform before the eye and each beat reveals a new angle.

Speaking of the video, Mahir Duman tells us: “I have created the video by using artificial intelligence. We discussed a lot in advance how the video could reflect Calcou’s approach to composing and sound selection, leaving room for the unexpected and random. So I chose to use pre-trained StyleGAN2, but left them purposefully undertrained to be as abstract as possible. When the AI was finished, I took back control and I fine-tuned everything, using five different types of videos and mixing, recolouring and reforming them. During the process, I felt like being in a deep ocean, figuring out forms and colours and merging them into something new. It was a very creative process and I’m happy to see that we’ve facilitated the creation of multiple forms of expressions in one pot.”

Pre-save: Places EP

‘Below’ is taken from Calcou’s upcoming EP, Places which is slated to be released next Friday – the 20th – via MfDR+C. Spotify seem to have a firm eye on the artist from the start as his debut single Lfrost was picked up by their Editorial team. More recently, ‘Below’ was selected for their Fresh Finds, Late Night Vibes and Fresh Finds Dance playlists – unsurprising considering the cheerful catchiness of the tune.
